Unibox recently partnered with Argentinian artist and designer Cindy Lilen to deliver SUR ANDINA, a multisensory installation that was showcased at the London Design Biennale 2025. The installation took visitors on an evocative journey through the Argentinian Andes, blending ancestral storytelling with material exploration in a strikingly immersive experience.
Part spiritual landscape, part textile laboratory, SUR ANDINA interlaced woven fibres, sculpted light, and a soundscape inspired by Andean mythology, ancestral memory, and rhythmic traditions. By combining texture, light, and sound, the installation invited a slower, more contemplative pace, encouraging deep engagement with themes of myth, nature, and the enduring connection between land and identity. The result was a living, breathing space: a powerful tribute to Andean culture and its rich spiritual and material legacy.
To help bring this vision to life, Unibox developed a bespoke lighting solution tailored to the installation’s artistic and technical needs. Warm CCT LEDs were used to sculpt the textiles, amplifying their spiritual and organic qualities. A 360-degree Neon Flex, combined with a modified Konnekt power system, was seamlessly integrated into the structural weave of the installation, enhancing the spatial narrative with soft, diffused illumination.
“It’s been a real pleasure collaborating with Unibox on SUR ANDINA, our immersive installation selected for the London Design Biennale 2025. From the very beginning, the Unibox team demonstrated not only technical expertise but also a genuine openness to support a vision that was deeply artistic, conceptual, and rooted in ancestral narratives.
As an artist and designer working at the intersection of contemporary craft and spatial storytelling, it was incredibly important for me to find a lighting partner willing to go beyond conventional applications, and Unibox did just that. The team embraced a creative process that was experimental and intuitive, and their support was instrumental in translating the emotional and material qualities of the project into a compelling visual experience. The Unibox team offered clarity, responsiveness, and a problem-solving mindset that made a complex project feel not only possible but exciting. Their commitment and warmth were key to building trust and fluid communication throughout,” said Cindy Lilen.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Faye Robinson, Business Development Executive at Unibox, said:
“Cindy had been in touch from one of our earlier industry exhibitions. We talked through our luminaire range and how we could support her with her artwork.
We were very privileged to be asked by Cindy and the Madre Tierre team to collaborate on the Sur Andina installation. Cindy needed a product which could be woven into her textile piece. We suggested our 360-degree Neon flex which had fully diffused light out and warm colour temperature options. We collaborated with Cindy on how best to incorporate the lighting within the main feature ‘loom’. We decided on an adapted version of our Konnekt power track system, that was incorporated into the artwork’s substructure. Experiencing the final lit effect interacting with the beautiful textiles and soundscape really created a true immersive experience & the opportunity to absorb the audience in a snapshot of the Argentinian folk law.”
SUR ANDINA stood out at the Biennale for its sensory depth and spiritual resonance, offering a meaningful reflection on identity, craft, and the enduring vitality of indigenous traditions.
